Six on Saturday – 13/12/2025

Well, that was no ordinary week. Storm Bram gave us a good dousing on Monday, accompanied by strong winds, so there is less than ever to feature this week. Please join in if you can, we need all the help we can get for our Six on Saturday meme. All you need is half a dozen things happening in your garden, post pictures on a blog and put a link in a comment down below. Simple. Lets crack on.

One.
I received an email from our local hedgehog rescue centre earlier in the week, asking if we had accommodation for a new arrival. I checked our two boxes, both were empty, then I looked at the trail cam footage for the past several weeks. There, on 28th November, was Elvis, out and about in daylight, albeit late in the day. He then tripped the camera another 58 times in succession, coming through from next door’s garden, gathering leaves from in front of our quite expensively bought boxes and taking them back to build a nest behind or under next door’s shed. Talk about ungrateful!

Two.
I’m not sure whether Cyclamen coum is flowering early or I’ve lost track of how late in the year it now is.

Three.
Monday was the stormy day but I didn’t get up to my allotment until Thursday to check on any damage. I’d been given a plastic shed by a neighbour and had already had to rebuild it once after a storm. This was what I found on Thursday. I rebuilt it to half its previous height, as a temporary measure pending replacing it completely. Most of it had blown out of shot.

Four.
There is nothing that could be said to be producing a display of flowers, mostly it’s just individual blooms hanging on, so here’s a montage of hangers on.

Five.
I’m not even sure I can blame storm Bram for busting a fence post along the side of the garden. It hasn’t been in for very long, maybe three years, and will be a pain to get at to repair. Actually, looking at the picture, it looks like I may have replaced a section of fence with new posts and panels, either side of an old post. That was asking for trouble, and it wasn’t long coming.

Six.
The nearest anything gets to actually making a show is Camellia ‘Minato-no-akebono’, which I think I put in last week’s six. Well, here it is again.

Anyhow, I told the hedgehog rescue centre that we had room for another little fella and today I went down to Cubert to collect him. They’ve called him Beaver, which I’m going to struggle to get used to. Our ten year old granddaughter arrived from Australia last Saturday and hedgehogs not being a thing out there, I let her lift him carefully from the transport basket into his new home. She kept lots of the shredded newspaper bedding wrapped around him to protect herself from his prickles, so there’s basically nothing to see, but you can have it as a bonus picture anyway.

The only other significant thing that happened here this week was that Sue and I got married on Tuesday. I’ve been single for 73 years, now I’m not. A shout out to Abbie, my niece, for designing and printing my tee-shirt.

  1. Congratulations! I love your montage, anything still blooming is a bonus in December. And lucky you having hedgehogs. I haven’t seen any round Suffolk for years.

  2. Wow! Huge congratulations! Best wishes to you both.
I’m still missing in action purely because of weather, combined with family demands on my time along with other pursuits that eat into my days – but once the weather changes for the better and the garden start to wake up I’ll be back. And just to let you know that’s all true I’ll also let you know that I still have a few hundred spring bulbs to plant!! 😧

Enjoy having your Australian family with you. 😊

  3. Congratulations!! How wonderful.

I really love the sweet hedgehog videos. And how nice that you’re able to shelter the other little hog. We are going to install a little hedgehog gate, so hopefully we’ll get a few, as well.

  4. What lovely news, Jim, and a lovely photo – but I don’t suppose you are going to tell us what triggered the decision…?! You both look very happy and I guess it was pre-arranged that there would be family there to share the occasion. I am not surprised you are disappointed in Elvis, not only spurning your hedgehog lodgings but then having the gall to take YOUR leaves to his alternative accommodation; I hope Beaver is more appreciative! Your montage is amazing – what colour! Good luck with your fence and shed construction tasks 🤞My six are at https://ramblinginthegarden.wordpress.com/2025/12/13/six-on-saturday-twirlies/

  5. Congratulations to you both, that’s a lovely photo! And how nice to have visitors from downunder. I had a brief visit this week from my Brisbane son, he’s on his way home now sadly, but he is a busy man and has a young family to get back to for Christmas.

  6. Congratulations on getting married (never say never!) and having a new hedge-child. So adorable! Thanks also for the colorful pics. My eyes are already weary of white, but I do love the snow for its ability to protect what lies beneath and to brighten short days. I have nothing new to share, but a picture of my cat being warm and happy (she hates the outdoors unless it is on the other side of a plate glass window.

  7. Wow, congratulations! I love the t-shirt, very appropriate. It’s great to see Elvis thriving, fingers crossed Beaver does too.
I wouldn’t have enough “hangers-on” to make a montage, yours is fabulous.

    1. Congratulations!

The topics in your entry are very interesting – a destroyed fence, the hedgehog in the box with the newspaper… everything is very inspiring.
