In one of the clips of video from my trail cam it was apparent that the hedgehog who had recently started using my newly installed hedgehog home was trying to climb the railway sleeper wall behind his home. I constructed a ladder and when I checked the camera this morning, discovered that he has found and mastered it. Fair made my day.
Great idea, and so glad he caught on so quick!

So, . . . it is beneficial to the garden because it eats snails and grubs and such? It still looks scary.

It’d be a lot more scared of you than you of it.

It could be as scared as it chooses to be. I would be GONE!

Clever creature! Hope he/she is helping to keep the slug population down for you.

What a great example of ‘nature watch’ in your own garden.

Fantastic ! It’s great to see that, and the quality of your camera seems very good: it makes me want to buy one…

This is such a treat Jim, thanks for sharing! I’m in the market for a new wildlife camera as mine seemed to start taking on board water and died – which one do you have, can you recommend any?

Mine is a Gardpro A3S. There seem to be hundreds to choose from. I didn’t want to get anything too cheap because it seems likely that the cheapest were pretty poor quality, but didn’t want to spend too much as we don’t get much of real interest in the garden, which is in the middle of a housing estate. I just wanted to know whether the hedgehogs were active and be able to monitor them a bit, I don’t need all the pictures of the neighbour’s cats. It’s OK, I’m not convinced it’s totally waterproof, but it meets my needs.

Thanks very much Jim – same here, we don’t get a huge amount of activity but I would like to know if we have a hedgehog (and I have in the past used it to monitor for rat activity!) A mid-range one is exactly what I’m after. I shall look into this one. We did once catch a fox on ours, which was a nice surprise (luckily they don’t seem to cause and damage and hopefully they eat the odd rat…)
